Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS to be sold by UK retailer Tesco

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

The iPhone went a little bit more mainstream today as Tesco, the UK’s version of Walmart, announced that it will be adding both the iPhone 3G and the 3GS to its mobile phone lineup. Both versions of the iPhone will be available for purchase in Tesco’s in-store mobile phone shops and online through Tesco Direct. Similar to Tesco’s other mobile offerings, the iPhone will run on O2’s cellular network and will presumably be sold with Tesco’s cut-throat pricing plans. Holiday shoppers can rejoice as the popular Apple smartphone is expected to be available just in time for the holiday shopping season.

Office Mobile 7 (2010)/WM 7 on Microsoft.com

Friday, November 20th, 2009

In what appears as another nod towards confirming how Windows Mobile 7 will look like when it is released next year, Microsoft has posted the Office Mobile 7 UI concept that we reported on a few weeks back on their main Office website as a screen shot of Office Mobile 2010. The image can be found on this page, although we are unsure how much longer it will be up. Huge tip of the hat to Stephen Chapman who originally reported this on his site, MSFTKitchen.com. This is yet another confirmation that this will indeed be the layout of Windows Mobile 7 when it is released. Only time will tell as we get closer to the scheduled release.”

I wondered when we’d see an Office Mobile 7 story surface. I sure wish this was coming out sooner. But you know, if Office Mobile is created robustly, Microsoft could have a productive, professional hit on their hands. With the Sharepoint Workspace, users can feel like they truly have their office with them. I was messing around with the new Office 2010 beta on my desktop and for the most part - I like it. I hope Office Mobile seamlessly blends in well. What do you all think? What does Windows Mobile 7 absolutely have to have to be successful?

BlackBerry Storm2 9550 hands on

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Better late than never, right? The BlackBerry Storm2 isn’t exactly rocket science. Usually companies whether it’s a car manufacturer, handset company, computer maker or others follow up on an existing product and label it “new and improved.” Just like clockwork, RIM has spit out another iteration of their BlackBerry Storm series and this time it’s the much-awaited BlackBerry Storm2 9550 for Verizon. Finally the handset packs everything you’d hope for in a BlackBerry as far as hardware specs are concerned: global roaming, Wi-Fi, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a decent processor, and 256MB of RAM. Since the screen is pretty much the most important part of the Storm as it’s the only navigation and text entry method, it is great to see RIM improve on their existing implementation and almost knock it out of the park. What’s funny is that the same way the Storm2 works is how it was initially described to us way back in July of last year, and we’ve heard that the original Storm was actually supposed to be more like the Storm2, but we won’t get too far into that as it’s unsubstantiated at this point.

We covered the BlackBerry 9520 a bit as we have been playing with it for a little while, but the screen has got even better with a retail unit and it’s less noisy and even more fun to use. Typing is pretty easy, and the unit in general feels great in your hand to hold and use. As far as market positioning for the Storm2, Verizon hasn’t made things easy for RIM lately. Many people have said that this is what the first Storm should have been, and while we agree, we don’t think it’s too late. If you have to have a BlackBerry and you want a touch-based phone, the Storm2 is an excellent choice. If you’re comparing it to other touchscreen handsets though, the waters get a little murky and you’ll have to make that decision for yourself. Hit up the BlackBerry 9550 gallery for more shots!

Palm Pixi gets unboxed before its release

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Oh, you don’t remember? Well we’re back at it again, this time with one of our connects doing the unboxing ritual for us. There’s not all that much exciting to report, you know, with the handset shipping with a USB cable, charging adapter, instruction manual and battery. But hey, an unboxing is an unboxing damn it, and we’ve got the goods. We promised ourselves we weren’t going to take any shots but, with the Palm Pre going for $99 in Canada and the awesome HTC DROID Eris selling for $99 on Verizon, is anyone really going to spring for a $99-priced Palm Pixi? Only time will tell.

HTC has confirmed its upcoming HTC HD2 shipment to Europe and Asia mid-this month, and is planning for a US version in early 2010. The HD2 uses the first capacitive touch display on a Windows phone to make viewing, zooming and resizing websites, Microsoft Office files, PDF documents and pictures easier with just a pinch of your fingers. The large display also enables faster, more efficient and accurate typing using the onscreen keyboard. Samsung OmniaLITE B7300 Review

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Introduction:

The affordable smartphones that offer many functions typical of high-end devices have always been a major temptation for people who don’t feel like spending a fortune on a handset, but don’t mind getting cool extra features like a decent browser and additional applications. Unfortunately, these so-called “affordable” models are often plagued by issues, meaning you can easily end up with a handset with lower screen resolution or without Wi-Fi or find out the camera is much worse than you thought it would be, etc.

In this review we are taking a closer look at one of the latest contenders for the crown in the light-weighted Windows phone category, none other but the Samsung OmniaLITE B7300 that also happens to be one of the major rivals to the HTC Touch2 and Acer beTouch E200. So, stock up on food and drinks, switch off your phone and TV set and brace yourself for a most fierce smartphone clash.

Design:

The Samsung OmniaLITE B7300 looks inconspicuous, which doesn’t mean it´s unappealing. Quite the contrary, the overall design shows utmost attention to detail, makes the phone really attractive and comes with several offbeat elements like the honey-comb pattern on the back of the phone. Our unit is jet black, but the handset is also available in versions with red or blue upper and lower parts of the body.

The resistive screen is large enough for an affordable device and measures 3 inches. Well, the image quality will certainly fail to wow you with saturated colors, but at least pictures do not appear choppy thanks to the resolution of 240×400 pixels.

The send and end keys are on the front side, along with the Action button that generally, takes you a step back into the menus and sports silver framing that gives it a more stylish look. The volume rocker and Menu buttons are on the left hand side, while the camera shutter, microSD slot and screen lock/unlock button are on the opposite. Finally, the microUSB port is on the top and the 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus, but without flash is on the back, below the loudspeaker.

The Samsung OmniaLITE B7300 looks quite appealing and comes with large enough screen, but compact overall size that makes it really handy to use with one hand. Moreover, the phone is a far cry from feeling fragile to hold, because the build is very tight, without any loose parts.
