HTC EVO 4G hacked to support 60 FPS video

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

fps30evo-60

HTC EVO 4G owners disappointed that the graphics on their premiere handset were deliberately capped at 30 FPS by HTC should head over to xda-developers and give the folks over there a hearty thank you. With some clever coding, this software cap has been lifted and select EVO 4G handsets can achieve up to 60 FPS performance in games and other graphic intensive applications. This fix needs some tweaking as tearing, v-sync issues, and other graphics anomalies are present after uncapping. The fix is also limited to handsets with hardware 0003 and an Epson display (how to check your display courtesy of PPC geeks). The devs are working on these limitations and interested parties should keep a keen eye on the very active thread for developments as they occur.

Google on Android 2.2: ‘feverishly working to get a final version out the door’

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Considering Google’s typically feverish pace in deploying new Android builds, we’ll admit — we kind of expected Android 2.2 Froyo to be released to retail Nexus Ones by now… but no dice. So, where is it? The company hasn’t committed to a firm date for a global roll-out yet, but there’s official word from an Android employee over on the Nexus One’s support forums this week that FRF72 is not the final update and that a release “will only happen once a release candidate meets [their] quality criteria.” Korean versions of the phone were pegged to launch with 2.2 this week, so any way you slice it, it can’t be long now.

Why Your iPhone 3G Didn’t Get Backgrounds With iOS 4

Why Your iPhone 3G Didn't Get Backgrounds With iOS 4

Today we finally got to officially download iOS 4 and update our iPhone and iPod touch devices. There was a catch though: iPhone 3G users don’t get to use all the new features—like backgrounds or multitasking. Here’s why.

Gizmodo reader Erica wrote Steve Jobs an email asking why her iPhone 3G doesn’t get to do everything a newer iPhone can:

Hey Steve! I just upgraded my iPhone 3G to iOS 4 and was really looking forward to setting a background on my home screen. Guess that’s not happening, but I’d like to know why.

See, I get why you don’t include multitasking. My iPhone gets pretty hot when certain apps run, couldn’t imagine how multitasking would fry my phone.

But the background thing, I don’t see how that would be memory intensive and/or battery draining. It doesn’t seem like that feature needs to be exclusive to the 3GS and 4G.

I hope this email finds you in good health.

Erica

Steve’s reply?

The icon animation with backgrounds didn’t perform well enough.

So basically our old iPhone 3G devices are too weak and pathetic to handle the pretty backgrounds of iOS 4—unless they’re jailbroken, of course. [Thanks, Erica!]

MobileMe to go offline tonight, respawn with new features

Friday, June 18th, 2010

mobileme

Just a quick little heads up to anyone who relies upon MobileMe, as the service will be down for maintenance overnight from 1am to 3am ET. Downtime is never fun, but it’s sounding a lot like when Apple’s engineers are done with the update we’ll finally see the beta label shed from the updated webmail portion of Me.com. That, and the release of a Find My iPhone app for devices running iOS 3.0 and up.

Sprint’s WiMAX service teases EVO 4G-toting New Yorkers (update: LA and SF, too)

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

We’d figured that Sprint and partner Clearwire were going to have a devil of a time rolling out WiMAX this year in New York City; urban canyons are always tricky, of course, but their oddball 2500MHz spectrum allocation isn’t the best at penetrating buildings and other structures, either. On that note, we’d been tipped earlier this week that a reader was seeing some weak WiMAX reception for the first time on his EVO 4G near Coney Island (see a shot after the break), and now, we’ve been able to independently confirm it on one of our own units — in saturated Midtown, no less — though we weren’t able to do much with it beyond get a notification that a “4G network is available.” Clearly this isn’t ready for primetime use, but it’s a good sign that these guys have officially started lighting up a few cells here and there. 1080p streaming, anyone?
